10. Suicide (Brutal Corpse cover)                   01.49

Line Up :
Pandu Mahendra – Vocals
Rizky – Guitars
Oki Haribowo – Additional Bass
Roy Agus – Drums

The Seed Of Parricide Split 2010 (4 Way Split, Released in Thailand). Pada debut album ini mereka memakai Additional Bass yaitu Oki Haribowo yang mana dia juga merupakan member dari The Legend Band in Yogya yaitu Death Vomit. Slamming brutal death.....itulah genre yang mereka mainkan dan musick mereka is really fast, brutal and straight forward song. Sound mereka terdengar seperti adanya sentuhan dari Internal Bleeding dan Devourment namun mereka juga banyak meracik death metal riffs and pounding drums. The chugging riffs are there but these guys are more in the vein of Suffocation and the music is dark, heavy and angry. The vocals from ‘Pandu Mahendra’ are excellent death growls that are perfectly suited for the music. Serta permainan gitar dari Rizky yang menampilkan fat riffs and groovy slam part are definitely what the band focus on. It’s hard to maintain the integrity and sound of a band when you only have one original member and in VENOMED’s case just the guitars has survived but i think that is not problem from him as long as he can share with others and somehow it all sound far more balanced and mature compared to the past material Demo 2009. The cover song ‘Suicide’ (Brutal Corpse cover) are much more exciting. The production sounds rather raw and unpolished, which is fine with me but still the guitars sound without any real depth and punch. And the drums tend to be a bit too high in the mix and that bury the guitars and bass. Tapi disini saya tetap menemukan bahwa album REMOVAL menjadi suatu kejutan yang menyenangkan. Overall is good, not too boring and the music diverse although the music mostly focuses on the fast and brutal also adds that extra something that make it a complete effort. So if you like brutal death with a good amount of slam and groove then i suggest you go and give REMOVAL a listen. Rating 8/10.

INTERVIEW: My interview with SCARS RAGE (Yogyakarta political grindcore band, Central Java, Indonesia) (English)

1. Kieran James: Hi, first of all please tell us your band history?

SR: This is me, 2529. Thanks to Dr. Kieran James and Busuk zine whom give us in the literal session a chance so we can be surfaced here. Surely as opening, Scars Rage was found in the mid of 2010 where before i really liked to play grind core technically like the great efforts of Cranial Incisored, Psychofagist, Naked City, Cephalic Carnage and unforgettable Deviated Symphony in my hope. Some songs had been written wait the drummers. But because of some bands have inspired to bring forward that concept instead death metal bands so I preferred to be back to grind core with my interest to Cyber/ Industrial approach. That was not difficult to shape the formation and I met B4 at that time he was still young has a drumming course in Crescendo musical studio as immediately we started the band make the simple songs with some native impact due the aggressiveness in addition B4 loves to play death metal. Our personalities are too sharp perceptively and we are afraid to be killer band and famous. Only like that and not too complex in the note books.

2. Why do you like to play grindcore music?

SR: Playing Grind Core for us is felt like we are going home (present context) to know ourselves how far we have been responsible as human being keep life and the place where we belong. A consequence that we have face in everyday life and self- awareness to build a perfect world. Without war, destitution and decreased sanity at least, that the logics we would like to introduce our own Grind Core due its way response the reality more than only the merely music but also the definitive purpose. As we live in the city sometimes we feel frustrated step the routine and getting stress with the unnatural, polluted and evolutionary “Who will die soon and who will be monkey?” impacts in the downtown opposite with the high buildings of emptiness and failure. Hip hop takes the significant- other from Jogjakarta urban underground to react the extrinsic circumstance progressively as we are welcomed in New York to paint the walls. Nu-Metal and Hard Core are still in the priority against the mainstream besides Punk/ Crust Core. That’s why we want to enhance a wonderful action accompanied their guys inspiring each other with grind core as the most capable of us (in the last battle of Angkringan). White conception is a beautiful viewpoint so we can’t be wicked to fetch the future with the vegan and straight- edge habits. Only ridiculous sometimes…!

3. How is the progress for your demo or album?

SR: After “Stereophonic Rebel” we are now in the efforts of “Libertine Antithesis” that will be released in April or as fast as we are in the final measure, the free pocket. This demo will contain 5 main songs with sort durations with a raw sound and old school standard, a pre-concept to its studio album. Besides that re-releasing “The Nation Fatigue” will be in June as possible to record 3 new songs that we have been prepared and in the addition of 5 remix songs due its better quality. A blossom EP by us to a long journey finding the soil of harvest we recommend in CD. And hopefully 6/7 songs split we attempt more professionally in the end of year where we wait the bands. It’s enough confused because of our activities make a limited time and B4 also pays in C.A.T.E since the past where we rarely went to the shows. Our full-length album “Third World Dismissal” we will be in ready certainly 3 years soon included its production.

4. What are your influences?

In the song writing we always try to be free to create the musical structures with our similar techniques without pushing the ability so that we can handle the songs in stages. Because there are only 2 members in the band we have to practice hard to give the audiences the best of us. B4 loves Death Metal very much and likes the bands, such as Burgerkill, Nasum, Misery Index, Propaganda, Napalm Death, Something Wrong, Melt Banana and some more. I personally like not to far from him especially from overseas, namely Lycanthrophy, Gride, Pig Destroyer, Smallpox Aroma, Severe Metastasis, The Arson Project, Wormrot, Damokis, Insect Warfare, C.A.B.T, Phobia, Idiots Parade, Jig Ai, Sakatat, Haemorrhage, Carnal Diafragma, Phobia, Moncho Cabrera Grind Punk, Black Hole of Calcutta, Beyond Terror Beyond Grace, The Kill, Mincing Fury and Guttural Clamour of Queer Decay, Rotten Sound, Infest, Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in the Dilapidation, Magnicide, Asesino, Lock Up, Creative Waste, Leng Tch’e, Truth Be Known, and Touched by Nausea. Some old school bands, viz Drogheda, Righteous Pig , Prophecy of Doom, Carcass, Exhumed, Brutal Truth, Terrorizer, Demisor, Unholy Grave, Teervet Kadet, Entombed, Upright Citizens, Obituary, Mass Separation, Godflesh, Massacre, R.D.P, Brujeria, Disrupt, Disgust, Misfits, N.O.T.A and a few whom have been in my memory . Also Access to Arasaka, Mortiis, Rage Against The Machine, Prodigy, The Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, U2, The Cure, Bjork, Kitaro, Goodnight Electric, Faust, Faun, Eivor Palssdottir, Underoath, Gojira, It Prevails, Maruosa, Arkona and some instrumental and harsh noise bands to freshen my mind. Disact, The Downgoing, Absvrdist, Suffering Quota, Utopium, Grinding Halt, Fear of Deep Blue Sea as the new comers like us. Again metal/hard core stuffs and Bong Ra!

5. What is your comment on Yogyakarta metal scene?

SR: Jogjakarta metal scene is now possibly (How is it?) in the next phase of being concrete for the activity and essence as one of biggest metal destinations in Indonesia, as You may see. And It’s propped by Central Java as we came from before Independence day. Great story when we are back to the last decade to remembering the most splendor of scene. Until now Jogjakarta has many talented bands equal with Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, also Semarang in the scales and contributions. After the sadness of catastrophe we have tried to fix our vision to stand again and not to let the next destruction where we had separated and lived individually be unknown. We pray for Jogjakarta…

6 I know Detritivor, Warhammer and Deadly Weapon. can you tell us some other good young bands in Yogya?

SR: Many new bands have risen here but I only find some in my opinion such as Exhumation, Deformed, Death Artery and Incarnation with their death metal attitude. Really ironic to view grind core scene here because we are not Indian to mean it but Indone. Yeah, Death Core tries to fill it like a vigor in the past where we could see Halbonera, Atret, Bloody Terror, Depredation, Deviated Symphony, Sanzia, play in the regional/ national shows.

7. I visited Avila studio in yogya in October 2011. people told me the bands can't use it anymore. is that true?

SR: What? Why we don’t know about that and possibly we can’t interfere about other business/ interest. Bad news for us. Like in my mind, underground music is really complicated to do and if there is not a more protection the underground musicians will be in the lack of situations because of some dumb perception and misinterpretation surely . We have been tagged to elaborate the schedules with RPM studio, so that matter is beyond our bustle. We are often hanged out in that cool place after and before recording. Blast and Gong studios have also the equal quality if possibly the readers want to know about Jogja musical scene. Many who have come and gone until this time. Don’t do drugs just beers (0%) and pogo!

8. Whose people helped you most in yogya when you first started your band?

SR: Truthfully we would like to thank to a lot of people who have helped us since we begun this band so we are in the hamdallah to breath. Some of them whom have been long to mention are Mas Adit and Wawan RPM, Mas Sofyan Death Vomit, Bang Kamal Damnation, Mas Yoga Propaganda, Pak Belang Angkringan, Bu Tince Salon ZZ, the guys of Depresi also some fellows from Jogja Corpse Grinder and Central Java. And absolutely Kanjeng Sultan Hamengku Buwono for how we can feel to play our music and not to be escaped from His broom beat because we are still bad boys often (playing truant), not Backstreet Boys. Forgive us, God.

9. Any message for your fans?

SR: It’s still far for our destiny however the sign is more than to make us sick, we love to play music with wishing esteemed we will be extricated sanely on the freedom to speak, behave, and sense in the term of democracy as we struggle nowadays. Sometimes, we miss our friends from the different sides of life who we leave or we were leaved. It’s not a game to be in the underground somehow we still enjoy to sing endeavor. Some good words for the readers and regarding all elements.
Do what you have to do first and then your will, don’t be too much Do what you have to do first and then your will, don’t be too much thinking about your boy/ girl friends but study. Always clean your bad room and bath before it smells. Know that we are not only musicians but also the house keeping activists. Viva reformation… room and bath before it smells. Know that we are not only musicians but also the house keeping activists. Viva reformation…!

INTERVIEW: My interview with Olla of Yogya/ Jakarta death-metal band DEMEANOUR

Shattered Archtype EP by DEMEANOUR is out now through international label Core-O-Sive Records [USA]
My interview with Olla of Yogya/ Jakarta death-metal band DEMEANOUR
By Dr Kieran James (University of Southern Queensland)
Email Interview, 25 January 2011
DEMEANOUR is: Olla - Vocals, Rury - Guitar, Nomme - Bass, Simonte – Drums.

Kieran James: Hi, here are the questions.
KJ: You are a very interesting character and dedicated metalhead having two bands - Mindfreak and the internet band Demeanour. As you request we will just interview about Demeanour now. Tell us about the band history.

Olla: Well, I’m just lucky having friends who still trust me to be their singer. Well, Demeanour is established due to the desire to keep moving forward and make some music by playing what has never [been] played in previous bands. We [put all our heart in it] all here and now Demeanour is: Olla - Vocals, Rury - Guitar, Nomme - Bass, Simonte – Drums.

KJ: Tell us more your process for writing songs and communicating. What cities do the players live?

Olla: Lyrics are the fundamental strength binding in every Lyrics are the fundamental strength in [all] Demeanour’s music. That is translated through the character of each member without restriction. It is clear that our music sets free with easy listening and friendly concept.I live in Yogyakarta and the others live separately in Indonesia because of some kind of activities we have, so communication is crucial for us. As much as possible we ought to keep the emotional connection we already have. But we decided Jakarta as the hometown just to make [it] easier [to] meet each other.

KJ: Has it been very difficult managing an internet band?

Olla: There are always advantages and disadvantages. For the advantage itself is we just spare our little time before computer to record tones from our head, share it via email to each member, then fix it and done. It’s not too difficult; I think it’s more efficient in managing time to make songs. It’s sooner and right on our target. And the disadvantage is our internet billing would increase haha...

KJ: What are your goals and plans for the band?

Olla: Goals: As I told you, our EP titled Shattered Archtype was released by Core-O-Sive Records (USA) last year. Now we have got label and would release our first album soon this year. We [are] also having cooperation with [various] parties relating to the development of this band. Plans: we plan to make great albums and have some national and international tours.

KJ: I guess you saw our interviews here with some of the Yogya bands. What do you think of the Yogya death-metal scene?

Olla: Awesome...they [have] grown rapidly and diversely, lots of great new bands emerge.

KJ: What are your favorite metal bands in Yogya including young and old bands?

Olla: [All] bands are good I think but there are some bands I have watched their live performance as follows: Death Vomit, Septicemia, Hands Upon Salvation, Spider Last Moment and Godforsaken.

KJ: Do you think death-metal in Yogya is just a trend or it can stay strong in the future?

Olla: I cannot [put] it into words but I think you should know about this one. The death-metal in Yogya already exists because so far this city has [had] an annual extreme music event presented [for] more than 20 years, called “Jogja Brebeg”. And up to now lots of great bands have released their new albums. For me, future belongs to people who prepare for it now, so Yogya has prepared!

KJ: Why do you love to play death-metal and be part of the death-metal scene?

Olla: Because this takes a lot of talent, the techniques, the passion, the crowd, the artwork, those promote uniqueness and independence.

KJ: Any message for your fans?

Olla: “Thanks for your support!”

KJ: Thank you.

Olla: Thanks for the interview KJ, I really appreciate it.
Regards,

INTERVIEW: "Welcome to the Morbid Reich": My interview with Agung and Dimex of DETRITIVOR (Yogya brutal death)

Jogja Corpse Grinder community (left to right): Agung DETRITIVOR, Aryo DEADLY WEAPON, Dimex DETRITIVOR,  Adin GENITAL CAVITY, Obet CRANIAL INCISORED, picture taken at the restaurant at back of the famous Avila recording studio in Yogya (where DEVO's The Prophecy album was recorded), 13 Oct 2011
My interview with Agung (vocalist) and Dimex (guitar) of DETRITIVOR (Yogyakarta, Indonesia brutal death-metal)
“We choose to play aggressive death-metal because we want to be different. In Jogja Corpse Grinder community, there are many styles so we also want to be different. We want our music to be colourful but still within the death-metal concept” – Dimex DETRITIVOR.
By Dr Kieran James (University of Southern Queensland)
Interview: 13 October 2011 at restaurant behind Avila recording studio, Yogyakarta
Extra comments and some language interpretation by: Oki, bass player of DEATH VOMIT.
DETRITIVOR is: Agung (vocals), Prima (bass), Dimex (guitar), and Anto (drums)

Kieran James: Thanks guys for agreeing to do the interview for my book on Indo death-metal. Oki will help you with language interpretation.
KJ: First question is: what type of music do you play?
Dimex: Aggressive death-metal.
KJ: Tell me about the history of the band...
Dimex: (this answer interpreted through Oki DEATH VOMIT): The band was formed in the middle of 2009 with the original line-up. There has only been two line-ups.
We choose to play aggressive death-metal because we want to be different. In Jogja Corpse Grinder [community], there are many styles so we [also] want to be different. We want our music to be colourful but still within the death-metal concept.
KJ: Have you had an album released yet?
Dimex: We have got demo, three songs and an Intro.
KJ: What is the response of the community and the fans here to the demo?
Dimex: We only made a few copies so the demo is not spreading here but it is spreading] in Bali and Jakarta. We were interviewed by Letters webzine [“Dapur letters”] and the response was good.
KJ: What are your main influences?
Dimex: SOLSTICE, SUFFOCATION [USA], SLAYER [USA], MALEVOLENT CREATION [USA].
Agung: KATAKLYSM [CANADA], VADER [POLAND], DYING FETUS [USA].
KJ: What is your goal and plan for the band?
Dimex: To release an album and spread the Jogja death-metal style and the music.
KJ: What are the good things about the scene here in Jogja? So far I enjoy hanging out here with Oki and Sofyan and visiting the music stores and Avila studio here. You know it was great today to get a picture taken with DEVO in front of the famous monument here in Jogja which is shown in the Flames of Hate DVD.
Dimex: Many different styles of music within death-metal [are here].
KJ: What are the main problems of playing death-metal in Jogja?
Dimex: The media, the newspapers, the magazines, their appreciation for death-metal is less or they don’t want to know maybe. The media is more concentrated on the big cities like Jakarta, like Bandung...
KJ: OK, you know Bandung is such a huge scene. Did you ever consider moving to Bandung to be with the scene there like CANNIBAL CORPSE moved from Buffalo to Florida to be part of the Florida scene?
Dimex: [No] because we were born here. The competition here between the bands is good and healthy.
KJ: What do you think of the Bandung bands?
Dimex: Good but almost all the bands have the same style.
KJ: What do your family think about you playing death-metal?
Dimex: My parents say it’s OK [Dimex is aged 26 and Agung is aged 19] as [long as] we finish our study.
KJ: What majors do you study in college?
Dimex: I.T.
Agung: Mechanical Engineering.
KJ: What are the lyrics you write about?
Dimex: About Nazi and Hitler, political. The lyrics of the new album will talk about all the crimes of Nazi and Hitler.
Oki DEATH VOMIT: The band put the swastika logo on their demo.
KJ: Why do you like to play death-metal?
Dimex: Why do you choose to make a research on death-metal?
[KJ: I gave Dimex an answer to this very good question but I didn’t write it down at that time. Ask me if you really want to know.]
KJ: Why do you think death-metal is so strong in Indo?
Dimex: We play death-metal; it’s like a natural selection. To play death-metal the ideology is “to be weak they will lose, to be strong they will live still”, the point is like that.
[KJ: At this point the chorus of “Master of Puppets” goes through my head. The meaning of that chorus is the same as what Dimex says: “To be weak they will lose, to be strong they will live still”.]
KJ: What do the strict Muslim people here think of death-metal?
[KJ: I ask this question because my book will be about the sociology of the death-metal scene in Indo not just about the music itself.]
Dimex: There is a Muslim community called FPI. I heard that FPI will go against metal music because of the lyrics. FPI thinks that all of the death-metal players are satanic worshippers.
KJ: Has anyone commented to you about the gore metal tee-shirts?
Dimex: Until today nothing like that has happened.
KJ: Did DEATH VOMIT help the young bands here and how did they help?
Dimex: DEVO supports the young bands and gives motivation to do the best in the future.
KJ: What do you think about JASAD singing about Sundanese culture and teaching the young ones the culture?
Dimex: It’s OK, there is no pattern that death-metal should or should not be like this. It’s OK if they don’t bother me. For example, if death-metal were to combine its music with Javanese culture it’s OK as long as they do not bother my music.
[The interview ended here. Thanks very much to Agung and Dimex.]

INTERVIEW: Goodbye Death-metal Hello Grindcore: Interview with DEADLY WEAPON (Yogyakarta, Indonesia)

JOGJAKARTA CORPSE GRINDER community (left to right): Oki Haribowo DEATH VOMIT, friend, Jay DEADLY WEAPON (white shirt), Agung DETRITIVOR, Aryo DEADLY WEAPON, Dimex DETRITIVOR, Yogyakarta, 13 October 2011
My interview with Jay (vocal) and Aryo (drums) of DEADLY WEAPON (Yogyakarta, Indonesia grindcore)
By Dr Kieran James (University of Southern Queensland)
Personal Interview at: the restaurant at the back of Avila studio, Yogyakarta, 13 October 2011
Interpretation by Oki Haribowo of DEATH VOMIT
DEADLY WEAPON is: Jay (vocal), Aryo (drums), Made (Guitar), and Ndandul (Bass).
Kieran James: Hi Jay and Aryo, thanks for agreeing to do an interview with me for my proposed book on Indonesian death-metal. First of all can you tell us the band line-up and the history of the band?
Jay DEADLY WEAPON: Actually we formed in the year 2009 but the only original member left is Aryo. The three others are new. We played death-metal music [originally] and then we reformed in about June 2011 with three new members [and] with new concept. From death-metal we changed to grindcore.
KJ: Ah, well you know the obvious question I will ask you next (this job is easy): Why did you change to grindcore?
Jay: I don’t know. Maybe because all of us like grindcore. We changed the sound a lot.
KJ: Where have you played your shows?
Jay: Many places in Yogya, [and] two weeks ago we went to Jakarta.
KJ: What are your main influences for the new grindcore style?
Jay: From Sweden ROTTEN SOUND, Swedish style [KJ: actually this band is from Finland]. They are different from NAPALM DEATH, a little bit different.
KJ: Have you got any death-metal influences?
Aryo: MISERY INDEX [Baltimore, MD, USA].
KJ: How old are you?
Jay: 23.
Aryo: 24.
KJ: What are the good things about the scene in Yogya?
Aryo: I think in the Yogya scene it is quite developed because we have many communities in here like from metal scene we have Jogjakarta Corpse Grinder.
KJ: Do you consider yourselves part of the death-metal scene?
Jay: Just a little bit.
KJ: What are some of the problems here in Yogya?
Jay [interpretation for this answer by OKI]: I think personally we are just a little segmented, so when hardcore band plays in the metal scene or metal band plays in the hardcore scene, the hardcore people’s enthusiasm for death-metal is not so much and death-metal people’s enthusiasm for hardcore is not so much. But we still respect each other.
KJ: Why do Indo people like death-metal so much?
Jay: I don’t know how to answer it [laughs].
KJ: Why do you like to play grindcore?
Jay: Just because we like it and we love it.
Aryo: Actually we don’t choose grindcore; grindcore chooses us to play it.
KJ: What do you sing about in the lyrics?
Jay: A little bit political, mostly about social life, like that...
KJ: What type of politics?
Jay: Indonesian politics. We have a song called “Corrupted” and it explains about the situation of politics in Indo.
KJ: When you last played death-metal were the lyrics different?
Jay: When we used to play death-metal the lyrics were about gore.
KJ: Do you write the lyrics?
Jay: Yes, everything.
KJ: What does your family think about you playing grindcore music?
Jay: They support me. Both of our families [are] supporting us.
KJ: OK, if some people (not me) say “you are Indonesian people so why do you play western music?” what answer can you give?
Jay: It’s a hard question [laughs]. I really don’t know how to answer it.
KJ: What are the goals or plans you have for the band?
Jay: Maybe one goal is to make grindcore more accepted by the people just like hardcore and death-metal [are accepted by the people]. From what I know there are only a few grindcore bands compared to hardcore and metal. Our goal is to make grindcore more acceptable.
KJ: Have you recorded any songs?
Jay: We already have six songs. We have plan for a full album, maybe by end of this year [2011] or early next year. We don’t know the title yet.
KJ: Are there any countries or places you want to play in future?
Aryo: Czechoslovakia, the home of grindcore. [KJ: On 1 January 1993 the country split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.]
Jay: Maybe Japan, maybe.
KJ: Last question: Any message for the fans of DEADLY WEAPON?
Jay: "Stay grind!"
Aryo: "Keep support!"
KJ: Thanks very much guys and thanks also to Oki.
[KJ: This interview showed the DEADLY WEAPON guys were shy at first but later on they gave more detailed answers. It seemed they enjoyed the interview process because both stayed back at the restaurant for the interviews with DETRITIVOR, GENITAL CAVITY (now WARHAMMER), and CRANIAL INCISORED. Jay especially helped out with some extra comments during those later interviews. The GENITAL CAVITY and CRANIAL INCISORED interviews have already been published on this site.]
